Hygge

What is Hygge?

Hygge (/ˈhjuːɡə/ HYOO-gə or /ˈhuːɡə/ HOO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment.

Pronounced “hoo-ga,” this Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life.

Why choose Hygge?

It comes mostly into practice during the cold dark days of winter, though incorporated throughout the year in daily life. The undefinable feeling of hygge was a way for the Danish to find moments to celebrate, acknowledge and break up the mundane or harsh. The simple act of celebrating life by incorporating simple pleasurable things in daily life, make a huge difference to one’s spirit.

How do I choose to Hygge today ?

The cold dark days of winter is fast approaching us, the temps dropping consistently each day. The need to Hygge is strong in me, ever since I found the meaning of this beautiful Danish word. Needless to say, you will see more detailed post on my blog about this topic or pictures of Hygge at home through these long winter months. Stay tuned!

For starters, with our temps in the teen digits, my first hygge moment to reach out for was to wrap myself & my hot water bottle in cozy wool. What better way to keep warm & feel content to start the weekend (or weekend eve ?), since Hygge is all about…..
