The mystery & enchantment of love

The mystery & enchantment of love

The mystery and enchantment of love breathes and shines as the eternal dance between closeness and distance, togetherness and aloneness.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. ~ Khalil Gibran

The mystery & enchantment of love

“Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup, but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart.
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

~ Khalil Gibran, The Prophet.

None other could have described it more beautifully than the greatest poets of all times, Khalil Gibran, when asked to talk on love.

Rainer Maria Rilke, writes on the mystery of love in a series of Letters to a Young Poet

“Love is the art of being alone together. Solitude or aloneness is the source of real love. To be in love, to be a beloved companion for another soul, means that we are willing to share and celebrate the gifts and treasures of our aloneness with each other and stand in awe and wonder before the mystery of another person. We will never fully comprehend who the other is; but we can be the guardians of the mystery.  The mystery and enchantment of love breathes and shines as the eternal dance between closeness and distance, togetherness and aloneness.

I hold this to be the highest task of a bond between two people: that each should stand guard over the solitude of the other”
