Why is self-care important?
Self care is a valid goal in itself. It’s so important to make sure we take good care of our body, mind, and soul each day, not just when we get sick.
Moreover, we must first take care of ourselves, to be able to take care of the ones we love.Remember, the oxygen mask analogy, while flying? We need to put on our oxygen mask first, to be able to help others with theirs.

Self care is important ….
- to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself as it produces positive feelings and boosts your confidence and self-esteem.
- to acknowledge to yourself, your family and the world that you are important.
- to stay sharp, motivated and healthy.
- to feel relaxed, calm and less stressed.
Why do we often fail at self-care ?
Practicing self-care isn’t always easy.
Most of us either live crazy busy lives juggling home & career or have stressful jobs or at times are so consumed with technology, that we don’t give ourselves some much needed “me time” .
Some of us even feel guilty of taking time to take care of ourselves. We think it is selfish, self indulgent & vain ( depending on our cultural upbringing).
Remember the quote by Christopher Germer who writes, “Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves, that we would give to others. ”. So practicing self compassion is important. Changing from old habits of denial isn’t always easy, but self-care is essential for our own well being, both physical & mental.
What happens when we do not practice self- care?
When we fail to practice & do not allot time in our calendar regularly for self care, we end up irritable, stressed out and agitated.

Understanding how stress affects our body physically & mentally is important. Stress, might show up as….
- Headaches
- Low energy
- Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation and nausea
- Aches, pains, and tense muscles
- Insomnia
- Confusion
