What is Sriracha Sauce?

The bright red Sriracha sauce is a spicy versatile sauce made from red chili peppers, garlic, vinegar, salt, and sugar. The sauce is hot and tangy with just a hint of sweetness, which sets it apart from your garden variety hot sauces.

Sriracha sauce, has multicultural roots and is supposed to have been introduced by a Vietnamese who moved to the United states in the late 80’s. Wanting to bring the flavor of home to the country he migrated to, the Vietnamese man , created this sauce using various ingredients. He named it after the small town Sriracha in Thailand.

The Sriracha sauce is taking the culinary world by storm these days.It has been used in soups, sauces & Bloody Mary’s alike. The taste, they say can soon become addictive.

My experiments with Sriracha Sauce

Last week at a friends place, I tasted Sriracha Cauliflower Stir Fry, for the first time. Not having tasted this sriracha sauce before, I was hooked with the sweet, spicy, tangy taste of it.I had made a mental note to try out this sauce in a chicken recipe, I planned to try, the coming week.

Here, I am today, experimenting the Glazed Honey Lime Sriracha Chicken for the first time. From the looks of it & the aroma, emanating from the recipe, I could tell it is going to be a hit at the potluck party today

When you want your protein, but you are not into curries at the moment b’coz of the hot temps outdoors, this is the recipe you must try.Will be perfect for the grill outdoors in summertime too.

Chicken drumsticks or Chicken thighs would go well with this “Rooster sauce” too.Today, I tried with Chicken breasts, either way, it tased great!

Ingredients

  • 4 4 -5 pieces Chicken breasts cut into bite size pieces

  • 3 tbsp 3 Sriracha sauce go easy on the sauce, coz its spicy

  • 2 tbsp 2 Honey more, if you like it sweeter & for the glaze

  • 1 tsp 1 Soy sauce

  • 1 1 Onion finely sliced

  • 1 tsp 1 Ginger Garlic paste

  • To taste Salt

  • 2 tsp 2 Lime juice

  • 1 tbsp 1 Oil spray or Coconut Oil

Directions

  • Warm oil in a saute pan, then add the finely sliced onions & sauté it till it turns golden brown.Now add the ginger garlic paste & stir it for a few minutes till the raw smell disappears.
  • To this add the cut chicken pieces & let sit for a few minutes till they turn tender in medium heat.Then stir.
  • Meanwhile in a bowl mix the Sriracha sauce, Soy sauce & honey together & set aside.
  • When chicken is partially cooked , pour the sauce mix in & stir them together, keeping the lid covered till it’s well cooked.Do not add any water, since chicken liberates it’s own water, you might want to remove the lid after sometime, so the water evaporates fast.
  • Squeeze lemon/lime juice once the preparation turns dry, add salt to taste
  • Garnish with cilantro/spring onions/chives & serve hot .

Notes

  • -Glazed Honey Lime sriracha Chicken can be used as a starter food.
  • -If you are grilling then you can brush both sides of the large chicken piece ( chicken thighs or chicken drumsticks with the Sriracha , honey, soy sauce,& lime juice mixture, while you flip occasionally until golden & sticky).
  • -If cooking on the stove top, follow the above method, quick & easy both ways
