1.Oil- 3 tsp.
2.Channa dhal- 1/2 tsp.
3.Uradh dhal -1/2 tsp.
4.Curry leaves – 3-4.
5.Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
6.Jeera/Cumin seeds- a pinch.
6.Onion-1 big( finely sliced)
8.Cilantro/Coriander leaves- 1/2 a bunch
9.Chilli powder-3/4 tsp
10.Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
11.Tamarind paste- 1/4 tsp
12.Salt- to taste.
1.Heat oil in a pan, add the seasoning ingredients one by one,until they turn light brown.
2.Now add the finely sliced onions& turmeric powder,saute it for a few minutes.
3.Next add the chopped tomatoes, chilli powder,& finely cut cilantro/coriander leaves & keep stirring till the tomatoes are cooked or cover the pan with a lid & stir occasionally for a few minutes.
4.Add salt to the above.
5.Wait for the above mix to cool a little, before transferring it into the blender.
6.Add the tamarind paste.
7.Blend the mix, into a fine paste without adding any water.
8.Ready to serve with idlis/dosas/appas etc.
Note: This chutney can be used as a variation instead of regular coconut chutneys,it can be used as a dip,it can be used in sandwiches in layering too…..just a spicy twist to regular idli days:).On second thoughts, it will be a hit with sweet dosas of any kind ( Thekkare/cucumber dosas for example:)…..for those us who want to watch the butter roll down the curves:)
